Pay monthly website or one-off build — what does it really cost?

The monthly plan is cheaper to start and dearer to keep. Here's the sum at year one, three and five, where renting genuinely makes sense, and the five questions to ask before signing either.

A pay-monthly website costs less to start and more to keep. In the UK, managed monthly plans run roughly £70–£250 a month; a comparable one-off build is £490–£2,490 paid once. The monthly option wins on cash flow in year one and loses decisively from around year two — and the difference that matters most isn't the money, it's that you never own what you're paying for.

The sum, done properly

What you payYear 1Year 3Year 5You own it?
Monthly plan at £79£948£2,844£4,740No
Monthly plan at £150£1,800£5,400£9,000No
One-off build at £990£990£990£990Yes
One-off + £49 care plan£1,578£2,754£3,930Yes

Even with a care plan running alongside it, the one-off route is cheaper by year three — and the asset is yours the entire time.

Where the monthly model is genuinely the right answer

Be fair to it: pay-monthly exists because it solves a real problem. It's the better choice if cash flow is genuinely tight and £990 in one go isn't possible; if you want someone else to own every technical decision; or if you're testing a venture you may close within a year. In those cases the rental logic holds, and there's nothing wrong with renting.

The questions to ask before you sign either one

Any honest provider answers all five in writing. If a provider won't, that itself is the answer.

Common questions

Is a pay-monthly website cheaper than paying once?

Only in year one. A £79/month plan is £948 in year one but £4,740 over five years, with nothing owned at the end. A £990 one-off build stays £990. Even adding a £49/month care plan, the one-off route is cheaper by year three.

What happens to my website if I stop paying a monthly plan?

It usually goes offline. Most platform-built sites can't be exported, so leaving means rebuilding from scratch. Check the contract for who owns the domain — if the provider registered it, that's the real lock-in.

When is a pay-monthly website actually the right choice?

When cash flow genuinely won't stretch to a one-off build, when you want someone else to own every technical decision, or when you're testing a venture you might close inside a year. In those cases renting is a sensible trade.

What should I ask a web provider before signing?

Five things, in writing: who owns the domain, files and content if I leave; what's the total at year three and five; can the site be exported; is local SEO included; and what happens to the price at renewal. A provider who won't answer all five has told you something.
