// PLAIN-ENGLISH GUIDE

How to get your business on the first page of Google.

No jargon, no tricks that stopped working in 2019 — the seven factors that genuinely decide local rankings in the UK, plus the new one most businesses haven't noticed yet: being recommended by AI.

First, understand what “page one” means locally

For a local search like “dentist in Norwich”, Google shows two different battlegrounds: the map pack (the three pins at the top) and the organic results below it. They're ranked by different rules — and you can win both.

The seven factors that actually move local rankings

  1. Your Google Business Profile — complete every field, choose precise categories, add photos monthly, and post occasionally. This is the single biggest map-pack factor.
  2. Reviews — volume, recency and replies — ask every happy customer, and reply to every review, good or bad. A 4.8 with 200 recent reviews beats a 5.0 with 12 old ones.
  3. A fast, mobile-first website — Google measures how real visitors experience your site. Slow or broken-on-mobile sites are filtered out of serious contention.
  4. Pages that match searches — one page per service, with the service and town in the title and headings. “We offer many services” ranks for nothing; “Dental implants in Ipswich” ranks for exactly that.
  5. Consistency everywhere — the same name, address and phone number on your website, Google profile, Facebook and directories. Inconsistency erodes trust silently.
  6. Local proof — your town in your content, genuinely: areas you serve, local landmarks, community involvement. Written for humans, read by Google.
  7. Time and consistency — rankings compound. The businesses on page one have usually just done the basics correctly for longer than their competitors.

The new frontier: being recommended by AI

A growing share of customers now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for recommendations instead of scrolling results. AI assistants recommend businesses whose facts are easy to verify: clear service descriptions, visible pricing, structured data (schema markup), consistent details across the web, and mentions on trusted sites. Very few UK small businesses have optimised for this — which is exactly why it's the cheapest advantage available right now. Every site we build ships with the structured data layer AI systems read.

Common questions

How long does it take to rank on the first page of Google?

For local searches in a typical UK town: 2–6 months of doing the basics properly — a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, and a fast site with a page per service. Competitive city-centre terms take longer; nobody honest promises “page one in a week”.

Can I pay Google to rank first?

You can pay for ads (the results marked “Sponsored”), and they stop the moment you stop paying. Organic and map-pack rankings cannot be bought — they're earned through the factors in this guide.

Do I need a website to rank in the map pack?

Technically no, but practically yes: Google uses your website's relevance and quality as a ranking signal, and profiles with strong linked websites consistently outrank those without. It's also where searchers land to decide whether to contact you.

What is schema markup and do I need it?

Schema is a structured-data layer in your site's code describing your business, services, prices and FAQs in a format Google and AI assistants read directly. Visitors never see it; algorithms rely on it. Every site we build includes it.
